What the LineKeeper battery backup does

When your phone line moves from copper to digital, your landline runs through your broadband hub, and the hub needs mains power. In a power cut the hub switches off and takes your dial tone, Wi-Fi and alarm line with it. LineKeeper sits between the hub and its plug and takes over instantly.

It's a small, silent battery backup unit (a UPS for your router) built for the 12V hubs UK providers supply. It isn't a bulky office UPS. Read the full how it works guide or our comparison of UPS options for a router.

Who it's for, and who it isn't

LineKeeper is for you if

  • Your home phone now runs through your broadband hub (a digital landline).
  • You or someone you love uses a pendant or telecare alarm.
  • You want the landline and Wi-Fi to keep working in a power cut.
  • You want something that fits in about a minute, with no engineer and no app.

It isn't for you if

  • You want to power the whole house, the TV or the kettle in a power cut. LineKeeper is built for the hub only.
  • Your hub's power plug says anything other than 12V. Check the label before you order.
  • You already have a whole-home battery or generator that covers the hub.

What happens in a power cut

  1. 1. The mains fails

The lights go out and the hub starts to shut down. You don't have to do anything.

  2. 2. LineKeeper takes over

In 0 seconds the battery picks up the load. The hub never switches off, so it never has to restart.

  3. 3. Phone, Wi-Fi and alarm stay on

Your landline keeps its dial tone, the Wi-Fi stays up, and a pendant alarm can still call out.

When the mains comes back, LineKeeper hands the hub back to the wall and quietly recharges itself. The full detail is in how it works.

Which hubs it fits

LineKeeper works with the 12V hubs the big UK providers supply, including the white Openreach fibre box on the wall. The adapter tips and splitter lead you need are in the box.

Not sure? Turn your hub's power plug over and read the label. If it says 12V, LineKeeper fits. If it says anything else, it doesn't, and we'd rather tell you now than take your money.

How long it lasts

The 74 Wh battery runs a typical hub for 4 hours or more. Providers only have to offer vulnerable customers 1 hour of backup, so LineKeeper gives you several times that minimum.

Frequently asked questions

Will LineKeeper work with my broadband hub?

If the label on your hub's power plug says 12V, yes. That covers current hubs from BT, EE, Sky, Virgin Media, TalkTalk, Vodafone and Plusnet, plus the white Openreach fibre box on the wall. The adapter tips and the splitter lead are in the box.

How long does the battery last in a power cut?

4 hours or more on a typical hub, from a 74 Wh battery. Running the fibre box as well, or an older power-hungry hub, brings that down. A small modern hub makes it last longer. Either way, that's several times the 1-hour minimum providers work to.

Will my cordless phone work in a power cut?

Not on its own, because a cordless base station needs mains power too. Keep 1 ordinary corded phone plugged into the hub. They cost a few pounds, need no power of their own, and with LineKeeper behind the hub they work just as the old landline did.

Will a pendant or telecare alarm still work?

Most alarm boxes have their own battery. What they lose in a power cut is the phone line, because the hub goes off. LineKeeper keeps the hub and the line up, so the alarm has something to call through. Always test it with the alarm provider after fitting.

Do I need an engineer to fit it?

No. Unplug the hub's power lead, plug it into LineKeeper, then plug LineKeeper's lead into the hub. It takes about 60 seconds, with no app and no settings.

What happens if the whole area loses power?

LineKeeper powers the equipment in your home. Your provider's network has its own backup power further up the line, and in most power cuts the weak link is the hub in your front room. That's the link LineKeeper fixes.

Can I get a free battery backup from my provider?

If you depend on your landline, for example because you have a telecare alarm or no mobile signal, ask your provider. They must offer a free solution to customers who qualify, but it only has to last 1 hour. Everyone else is usually asked to pay around £85 to £150.

Is it safe to leave plugged in all the time?

Yes, that's what it's built for. It sits behind the telly, keeps itself topped up and does nothing until it's needed. It has no fan and makes no noise.

How much is delivery and when will it arrive?

Delivery is free and tracked anywhere in the UK, and takes 2 to 5 working days.

What if it doesn't suit me?

Send it back within 90 days for a full refund, for any reason.
